Tab 17. Power Letter- March 1996

Passage 1

"I have been promised, finally, that on March 15th the State or Crown Prosecutor will tell me and my attorney, Doug Christie, that the government intends to do with me. Will the State once again prosecute me on behalf of the Holocaust Lobby and on the backs of weary tax payers? Or will the Lobby have to pay finally out of their own pockets, so that can appreciate [sic] the costs I have had to incur over the years for my own defense.

The constellation arranged against me does not look very promising for me. Regardless of who prosecutes me, It will be my meagre resources and the help and support of my friends pitted either against the power of the State or against the well-oiled, well-connected, influential and most powerful minority in Canada"

Analysis

In the second paragraph, the who in "Regardless of who prosecutes me" is initially unspecified. However, the form takes its meaning from the cataphoric relation between it and the disjunctively conjoined expressions the power of the State and the well-oiled ... most powerful minority in Canada. The implication here is that these two entities prosecute the writer.

The power of the State is clear in meaning: it is the government (of Canada). The most powerful minority in Canada takes its meaning from the previous paragraph in which the writer asks "Will the State once again prosecute me on behalf of the Holocaust Lobby ...?". Thus, the writer asserts that the Holocaust Lobby, an epithet and code expression for Jews, are prosecuting him. The cooperative principle, and especially the maxims of quality and manner lead the reader to assume that the writer has evidence for such an accusation.

One final implication is that the court and/or tribunal proceedings are, by definition, also a part of the conspiracy. Yet once the reader accepts that courts and tribunals are conspiratorially linked to the Holocaust Lobby, this provides a warrant for the reader to distrust and reject any court or tribunal actions and decisions.

Passage 2

"The media of Canada, because it is largely blinded by self-induced Germanophobia for the last 50 years, can no longer be trusted to ring the alarm bells against this unholy troika of Intelligence Service, Intelligence Review Committee, and a Holocaust-Lobby- driven Government - headed by a Prime Minister who is surrounded by more Jewish staffers and "advisors" than any other Prime Minister I can think of in my 38 years in this country! The current Canadian State, under this Prime Minister, has totally bought into the idea that any Jewish interest is also automatically a Canadian interest - as if the two were one and the same!

Government - at least civilized and honest government and its institutions - should be above ethnic quarrels and should not take sides in inner-ethnic disputes such as the thorny and murky Holocaust issue. It is a matter between Germans and Jews. What respect can you possibly marshal for a prime minister and what fairness can you expect from him who will stand there, cowtow [sic] to the Holocaust Lobby, announcing to the world that "Holocaust deniers are not welcome in Canada..." - a right for which I fought and paid for nine long years and the Supreme Court of Canada finally guaranteed me on August 27, 1992."

Analysis

In the first paragraph, the writer asserts the existence of an unholy troika (where unholy reflects the writer's negative attitude toward the group) consisting of three entities, one of which, it is asserted, is driven, that is controlled, by a Holocaust Lobby, again an epithet for Jews. This association of the Holocaust Lobby with Jews is strengthened by the writer's comment that the Prime Minister is under the influence of an inordinate and inappropriate number of Jews. This paragraph suggests that to be Jewish is by stipulative definition to be a member of the Holocaust Lobby. The writer's view that this influence is inappropriate is indicated by the final emphatic statement.

In the second paragraph, the writer asserts, without warrant and as a fact rather than an opinion, that the present Canadian government equates Canadian and Jewish interests, thereby implying that Jews have succeeded in a nefarious scheme to control Canadian policies. Of course, Canadian and Jewish interests simply can never be exactly the same. It is not clear from the paragraph, just what policies are asserted to be controlled by Jews.

In the third paragraph, the writer distinguishes between Germans and Jews, implying that Jews cannot be German and vice versa. Moreover, the writer asserts that the Holocaust is an ethnic issue. Coupled with the distinction between Germans and Jews, this statement implies that Germans are an ethnic group, exhibiting some measure of homogeneity, as are Jews. Yet Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary defines ethnic (as an adjective) as relating to groups of people "classed according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural

[Page 21]

origin or background", and an ethnic (as a noun) as a "member of a minority group who retains the customs, language, or social views of his group". The use of the term murky in this context invokes the senses of dark, gloomy, monstrous, and even conspiratorial, all associated directly with Jews. Finally, the passage states that the Prime Minister is kowtowing to the Holocaust Lobby and is therefore in violation of the law, when he states that "Holocaust deniers are not welcome in Canada."

A discourse analysis of this passage yields the following structure:

I (= the writer) assert

1. that there exists an overt alliance of three groups:

a. the Intelligence Service

b. the Intelligence Review Committee

c. the Holocaust Lobby

2. that the alliance in (1) is

a. headed by the Prime Minister, who

I. equates Canadian and Jewish interests

ii. is untrustworthy (warrant: the PM's quote about Holocaust deniers)

b. influenced strongly by Jews (warrant: the PM is surrounded by too many Jews)

3. that to be a Jewish staff member is to be a member of the Holocaust Lobby

4. that the alliance in ( I ) is evil (unholy)

5. that Canadian media are

a. Germanophobic

b. untrustworthy

6. that Germans and Jews are distinct ethnic groups

7. that governments have no right to comment on ethnic issues

8. that the Prime Minister is speaking in defiance of the law.

[Page 22]

In summary,. the passage's intent is to portray the Canadian government as an instrument of evil Jewish interests. Thus. Jews are singled out as an identifiable group which the reader is Invited to hold in contempt.
