African found on Berlin track after attack by six neo-Nazis

Six neo-Nazis stabbed, beat and kicked an African man out of a moving
commuter train, authorities said Thursday, in the latest in a
disturbing series of attacks on foreigners in Germany.

The African, a 25-year-old asylum-seeker from Ghana, was found
unconcious Saturday morning on a track bed at the end of a commuter
line just outside the capital, said prosecutor's spokesman Erardo
Rautenberg in Neuruppin.

The man's skull was fractured, and he had been run over by a train,
forcing amputation of two toes from his right foot and his left leg
beneath the knee.

"We were only just able to speak to him yesterday. Before that he was
just muttering something about skinheads," said Rautenberg.

The victim, identified only as Katom J., was the second Ghanaian to be
brutally attacked in eastern Germany this year.

In Halle in March, a 31-year-old Ghanaian was insulted, beaten and
kicked out of a moving street car by three skinheads. His attackers
were convicted Tuesday. But only one was sentenced to jail.

Katum J. got on the train and was confronted shortly before midnight
Friday by the skinheads, who were shooting needles at train passengers
out of blowpipes, said Rautenberg.

A woman had pointed the Ghanaian out to the skinheads, he said, and
two of them approached the African, pulling out switchblades.

One of the neo-Nazis stabbed the Ghanaian, who said the others then
kicked him out.

German police are also being accused of brutal treatment of
foreigners.

Twenty-seven Hamburg police officers were suspended last week after
being accused of beating up foreign detainees. The Nigerian government
filed a protest with the government this month complaining about what
it claimed were 24 unexplained deaths since 1991 of Nigerians in
German custody.

In other neo-Nazi incidents, Jewish cemetaries in Berlin and the Saar
region town of Neunkirchen have been desecrated, police said Thursday.
