* French champion of poor under fire over Holocaust

PARIS - A Roman Catholic priest who champions France's poor and homeless
came under fire Saturday for backing the author of a book that claims
Hitler's killings of the Jews did not rank as genocide.

Abbe Pierre, 83 and regularly shown by opinion polls to be the most
person in France, defended author Roger Garaudy as an "honest man"
despite a
storm about his new book "The Founding Myths of Israeli Policy."

The anti-racist group MRAP expressed dismay at Abbe Pierre's support for
Garaudy, a long-time friend, and said it would seek to take Garaudy to
on charges of illegal revisionism about Nazi crimes in World War II.

Garaudy told TF1 television that the Nazis committed "massacres" or
"pogroms" of Jews but it was an exaggeration to call the killings a
"Holocaust" or "genocide."

"I consider that to compare Garaudy's work to revisionism is completely
excessive," Abbe Pierre said.

Abbe Pierre, who helped Jews escape from France to neutral Switzerland
during World War II, said that Hitler's crimes may have been exaggerated
passions about Nazi abominations after the end of the war.

He said a plaque at the Auschwitz death camp commemorated the deaths of
MILLLION people there, even though the figure now accepted is ONE MILLION.

"Even though I don't contest the overall figure of six million Jewish
victims, my abomination would be the same faced with a million. At this
level of horror, mathematics don't count," Abbe Pierre told the daily Le

Abbe Pierre has long shamed politicians of all sides into action. With a
soft voice and dishevelled white beard, dressed in simple robes, a beret
sturdy work shoes, he spent most of his life aiding society's outcasts.

He said he had read some of Garaudy's work. "The worst can
render to a cause is to give it exaggerated arguments," he said.
