David Irving, the historian who feels Hitler was misunderstood, will fight a petition to declare him bankrupt. The author of Hitler's War owes Penguin more than #2m for his failed libel action against the publisher and the author Deborah Lipstadt. He was ordered to pay an initial #150,000 within three weeks, with Penguin free to push for its entire costs. But seven months on, Irvine (sic) has not coughed up. Irving sued American academic Lipstadt and Penguin, claiming they had generated hatred against him (at least he now knows what that's like). He lost. Mr Justice Charles Gray found Irving had falsified history to exonerate Hitler. Lord Justice Pill later confirmed that Irving 'may be described as a Holocaust denier'. Irving is in typically robust form, vowing to fight: 'Penguin has a lot of ground to cover before it sees any money.' It hopes to gain rights to his work. Perhaps then it could have a book-burning session of which even liberals might approve....
