Brit Denied Entry to Canada

Nazi sympathizer barred

A controversial British author and Holocaust denier has been barred
from entering Canada for a speaking tour, the Sun has learned.

David Irving, a historian and darling of the international neo-nazi
movement, was hand-delivered a letter in Los Angeles informing him
of the Canadian decision to deny him entry.

A copy of the Oct. 9 letter warns Irving he can't enter Canada because
of his criminal record and because "there are reasonable grounds to
believe (you) will commit one or more offences" in Canada.

Irving was convicted of violating a German law making it illegal to deny
the existence of the Nazi extermination of Jews.

Irving, in Los Angeles for a speaking engagement, was unavailable for
comment.

His lawyer, Doug Christie of British Columbia, said Irving has asked him
to fight the decision.

Christie said the ban is the result of political pressure and vowed to
overturn the decision.

"I am searching for a remedy, perhaps a federal court injunction."

Christie said he still hoped Irving would be present in British Columbia
on Oct. 28 to receive the Canadian Free Speech League's 8th annual
George Orwell award for courageous defence of free speech.

Irving's planned tour also included stops in Calgary, Kitchener, Hamilton,
Toronto, and Ottawa.

Despite an order from Canadian immigration [which, by the
way, I strongly disagree with] to leave the country, David
Irving got out on bail and spoke for about half an hour
in front of approximately 50 people at Michael Rothe's
European Sound Import store in downtown Kitchener,
Ontario [about 60 miles west of Toronto] on Saturday,
November 7, 1992.

Kitchener, a town of about 175,000 with a strong German
heritage [it used to be called Berlin until World War I],
is a known center of neo-Nazi and Holocaust denial activity.
Also sighted at the store were neo-Nazi publisher Ernst
Zundel and convicted felon, drug-dealer, and former KKK
leader Wolfgang Droege.  [Droege spent several years in a
US prison in the 1980's for his attempted takeover of the
Caribbean island of Dominica.]

Irving was greeted by approximately 75 demonstrators, who,
despite sub-freezing temperatures, chanted and carried
signs outside Rothe's store from about 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
Irving briefly appeared outside the store, and was interviewed
on local TV, before he was shouted down by protestors
chanting, "Irving, go home!"  Later, at about 3:00 PM, Irving
was ushered into a waiting car by police and, eyes averted
from the crowd, was driven away.

A man who claimed to be a history student at WLU handed out
anti-Semitic Holocaust denial literature briefly.  [I was not
able to get any copies.]

Niagara Falls, Ont. -- A furious David Irving was booted out of Canada last
night, hours after he was ordered deported.

The British author -- a favorite of the international neo-Nazi movement --
was hauled away in handcuffs after an adjudicator ordered him out of the
country.

"I've been railroaded," Irving said as he was led to a waiting van, "See.
Canada handcuffs writers," he said as he raised his hands.  "This is a
disgrace for Canada."

Before the verdict, Irving told reporters: "I think you'll find at the end
of this hearing whether I'm a liar or the Canadian government is a liar."

In a later statement issued from a holding cell at Pearson Airport, Irving
blamed "foreign pressure groups" for his deportation and claimed the
government relied on evidence they knew to be forged.

Irving had lied sneaking into Canada for a speaking tour Oct. 26, was
arrested in Victoria, B.C., two days later, and ordered to leave the
country in 48 hours.

	Trip to U.S.

He waited until the last moment to leave but U.S. immigration officials
twice denied him entry.  He was re-arrested by Canadian border police,
touching off a five-day deportation hearing.

Irving's defence rested on an assertion he had complied with the departure
notice by taking a one-hour hop across the B.C. border to Washington state.

Adjudicator Ken Thomson dismissed Irving's story as "a total fabrication,
concoted to garner further publicity and prolong your stay in Canada."

Thomson listed more than six discrepancies in Irving's testimony.

An angry Irving repeatedly interrupted Thomson's decision, ignoring warnings
to keep quiet.

	'Serve notice'

Irving abruptly stood up, slapped a paper on to [sic] Thomson's desk and
said:  "I have to serve this writ from the high court on you which I must
ask you to take notice of."

Thomson called security and Irving was ejected from the hearing.

The "writ" was a notice that he plans to appeal.

Spokesmen for the Canadian Jewish Congress and B'nai B'rith lauded the
decision.

"Ordinary Canadians are glad to say good riddance to Mr. Irving," B'nai
B'rith lawyer Marvin Kurz said.

	Racists clash with foes

Police cordoned off a city block around Bloor and Dufferin Sts. last night
as anti-racists clashed with white supremacists.

The scuffle erupted as 125 members of the Heritage Front left a meeting in
the Roma Banquet Room at Bloor St. W. and Gladstone Ave. where Holocaust
revisionist David Irving was expected to speak.

Irving had been deported hours earlier.

More than three dozen police officers, some on horseback, were trying to
break up scuffles as anti-racists and Heritage Front members hurled abuse
at each other.  A Sun photographer was roughed up in the melee.

Earlier, about 150 members of the Anti-Racist Action surrounded the
restaurant and pelted it with eggs.

"The Heritage Front is a Nazi front!" protesters chanted.  "Smash the
Heritage Front!"

"Tonight we're here to say no to Nazis, no to fascism, and never again,"
said Rodney Bovbiwash, an anti-Ku Klux Klan organizer.

Wolfgang Droege of the Heritage Front said:  "I think we have a right
to meet any way we want to."

Other white supremacists said they weren't intimidated by the protest.

"I am a racist and I'm not ashamed of it," said Jimbob Jones, 22, of
Newmarket.

"They're all race traitors," he said.
