Houston Texas

Normal people are going to become increasingly upset with the New
Revised National Standards for History, recently repudiated by the U.S.
Senate (99 to 1).

In addition to questioning all normal history as propaganda suspect:
all groups historically excluded from WASP history - womyn and
minority groups - are being encouraged to 'write their own history'.

The one factor bound to generate the most chagrin is the 'new media'.
No longer will orthodox book research standards apply. Oral history,
recording of individual's own version of history is now common.

Of course, Hollywood remains a prominent contributor, wherein works
of fiction, JFK & Schindler's List (interestingly Schindler's List
began with a fiction label) are now accepted as history by many.

One of the better known examples of fiction as history was reported
to be the documentary: "The Liberators: Fighting on Two Fronts in
WWII" - a film that claims the 761 Tank Battalion, an all-black unit
liberated the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau.

Military historians are reported to have objected to the film as
history because the film's facts conflict with military history as to
the exact whereabouts of the 761 Tank Battalion.

The New Revised National Standards for History recommends much of
the 'new media' for the study of history - and few if any
recommendations suggest 'normal' history sources.

Get used to the MTV generations standards for history. The technology
is attractive and besides; given the inability of today's college
students to read (SAT scores have dropped 100 points in the last
thirty years) entertaining video history with music will be the
revisionist's tool to write future history.

Some technological competition will come from the egg-heads with
links to the internet, retrieving reams of facts and citations in
minutes but, as usual, few ordinary people will care.

The National Standards for History (disclaimer: repudiated by U.S.
Senate 99 to 1) should really irk today's internet historians.

Some interesting excerpts from National Standards for History for
Grades K-4 ISBN 0-9633218-3-8 1st Printing 1994

Standards for Historical Thinking - Kindergarten to Grade Four
require that Children should also have opportunities to compare
different stories about a historical figure or event to analyze the
fact each author includes or omits, and the interpretations or point
of view communicated by each - important early steps in the
development of student's abilities to compare historical
interpretations of events.

Historical understanding also requires that students thoughtfully
listen to and read historical narratives created by others.

Because of the importance of *historical fiction* in opening the past
to children and engaging their interest in the people and events of
long ago, it is especially important for children to analyze these
stories for historical accuracy.

Real historical understanding also requires that children have
opportunities to create historical narratives of their own ....to
read historical narratives and fiction.... and to do so
imaginatively.

.. and a historical understanding of 'failures' - ...after reading
about ordinary people in historic times.

Obvious Questions: *Whose* failures & fiction?
