GERMANS BAN THIRD NEO-NAZI GROUP

BERLIN - A third neo-Nazi group has been banned as part of a broadening
German government crackdown on right-wing extremist groups.

"This is meant as a blunt warning to extremism," said Interior Minister
Rudolf Seiters yesterday.

Seiters said the National Offensive was an "aggressive neo-Nazi
organization" responsible for agitating against foreigners, Jews, and the
State of Israel.

He said banning of the National Offensive, along with earlier bannings of
neo-Nazi groups, showed the state would not allow extremists to "carry out
their disgraceful work."

Police launched immediate searches of homes and offices belonging to the 140
National Offensive members in seven German states, confiscating files and
other evidence.

Under currents [sic] laws, all files, propaganda material and money in bank
accounts belonging to the group may be confiscated.

The National Offensive is the third rightist group to be banned in the past
four weeks in Germany as part of tougher government response to right-wing
violence. Seiters banned the Nationalist Front last month.
