Below is a message he posted to the germanica-l mailing list. Date: Sat, 25 May 1996 09:06:38 -0400 From: DvdThomas@aol.com To: germanica-l@netcom.com Subject: Random comments on discussion forums. Regarding a recent comment on the Web as a discussion forum. There are some fancy ways to make a Web page interactive, but they are complicated and a bit slow. There's one on free speech that I'll try to reference if anyone wants to check it out. You go to the page and fill out a form rather like sending email. Your reply appears some amount of time later, I don't know how long. A standard Web site is next to impossible to use for continuing dialogue, far too many delays and cumbersome procedures. One possibility that I have not seen developed yet might lie in the Web page sites offered by AOL and I presume those of GNN. These allow anyone with a Web browser and FTP capability to upload to that site. I think it is then a simple matter of making the material visible to others, or that may already be the case on upload (anyone can upload, anyone can read, only the account holder can download). You have then the problem of connecting multiple threads in series, something now left to the email receiver (you don't want to know how I store mine, because I don't even know). And the additional problem that it's public, can be jammed with uploads if somebody doesn't like it. David Thomas
