My name is Rachel Brawdy and I am a sixth grade physical education teacher. I
am working on my Master's degree and am currently taking a Sociology of sport
class. My professor, himself a holocaust survivor has written a book about
children and play in the Holocaust. I would like to know where you were
confined during the war (Please be specific) and what games you played. Even if
the games seemed trivial. I would love to hear how games and play was a part of
your existence and survival. I would also like to know how old you were during
those years.

Thank you.

Replies may be forwarded to this address or to the list.

I'm interested in learning more about the Nuremberg medical trial
(Karl Brandt et al v the USA, 1946). I have access to the trial
materials on microfilm which I am using for work on the
'euthanasia' programme. I am particularly interested in
the background to the trial-especially why the Brits were
not involved in prosecuting the trial. I am also interested in
any published accounts of the trial. So if anyone out there
can help with references I'd be very grateful.
Many thanks

Subject: Were Jews Ever Placed in Prisoner of War Camps?

From: Marc Shapiro

I am currently writing the biography of a man who was in the Warsaw
ghetto. He is known to have been treated very well and people suspected
that he had some ties to important Nazis. After the war he claimed that
since he was a citizen of Lithuania he therefore was treated better than
the Polish Jews since the Soviet Union (which had taken over Lith.) and
Germany were allies. Is this believable? I have never before heard that
Jews from Lithuania were treated any differently than Polish Jews.
Furthermore, after Germany went to war with the Soviet Union he was
removed from the ghetto and brought to a Russian prisoner of war camp in
Germany. Does anyone know a similar case of someone being removed from
certain death (e. g. in the Warsaw ghetto) and being placed in a prisoner
of war camp? Were Jews ever placed in prisoner of war camps?
If anyone can help me answer these questions I would be greatly
appreciative.

I just wanted to say in response to your inquiry that as far as I know Jews
who placed in POW camps were those who joined general anti-Nazi partisan
groups. But if they were discovered as Jews I thought they were sent off
to the camps. Jews who received special treatment in the ghettos worked
for the Nazis in some fashion. Citizenship had nothing to do with it.

Yes I have heard of Jewish soldiers in Western European Countries that
were overrun by Germany being place in POW camps. I also heard that the
Germans did not know they were Jews and that they depended on their
comrades not to divulge it.
There is a Jewish Polish man who served in the French Army who survived
the war in a POW camp, he now live in Los Angeles.

Marc,

It seems to me, off the top of my head, that there was a contingent
of Jews located at the Sagan POW camp in Silesia.

Off hand, I don't know of any situation where someone was rescued
from death and relocated. Usually it was the other way around, as you
know.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

From: "Terry Moore"

Peter,

I really wish I could help you here. I have several books that deal
with the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, mainly the trials of the major
war criminals, but nothing specifically dealing with the medical
trials. The only one I have in this respect is that which deals with
the trials of the SS officers involved in the Einsatzgruppen.

The US Government published a 40+ volume transcript of all the trials
in the late 1940's or early 1950's. It is called "The Trial of the
Major War Criminals". You might write the State Department or the
Natinal Archives here for info on that.

I would be most interested in your research, and would like very much
to receive a copy of it, once you are finished. I will gladly pay all
costs.

Thank you very much.

An excellent source is the first volume of "Trials of War Criminals Before
the International Military Tribunals". (Note - this is not the series
called "Trials of Major War Criminals...". The one I am referring to
has 15 volumes or so and was published by the US government).

This volume contains transcripts of the "medical trials" as well as
the texts of many Nazi documents describing the experiments. I can mail
you some that I have typed in.

Subject: Games played by Children in the Camps

From: Cecelia A Clancy

Dear Ray,

I can show your message to some Pittsburgh survivors, but all of
the ones I know were either teenagers or young adults during the
Holocaust. What is the upper-age range (during the Holocaust
years) of the individuals you would like to study?

Children almost never survived in the death camps - they were almost
always killed upon arrival. Some exceptions were the few children
who were selected upon arrival for experiments (and then survived
the experiments) and children saved by some of the SS to serve as
"lovers".

There were children in Terisienstadt. It is from one of them that
we get the poem "I Never Saw Another Butterfly."

Some children might have escaped from ghettos. It is well documented
that children would climb through sewers, through or over the wall,
etc to smuggle in food and material. These children, if indeed
escaped, would most likely have hidden for the next few years.

There were also children who were known to be hidden by various people on
farms, in towns and in villages For more information of this particular
group of people, you can contact the Hidden Child Foundation, which is run
by the ADL. Write:

I'm trying to find thorough information about the revolt in the
Treblinka concentration camp. Partly for professional and partly for
personal reasons, I'm also researching a supposedly little-known
figure of that resistence movement: Moshe Y. Lubling, who Stanislaw
Kohn cites as one of four instigators in "The Treblinka Revolt"
(-Story of the Battle of the Ghettos_, ed. Cukievman and Bassok,
1954). An y references, no matter how insignificant, to this man
would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Kimberly,

There is a book out on the Treblinka revolt. It is titled "Treblinkaa" and is
by Jean-Francois Steiner. It is written from the perspective of survivors
who lived in the camp. It is very thorough and gives a chilling insight into
what life was like in Treblinka. About the individual you are inquiring about,
I don't recall whether or not his name was mentioned. Many names were mentioed
in this book, so his may be one. For personal interest in this subject, this
is excellent reading. Hope this helps at all.

Thanks to Cecelia for reminding me of the hidden children. I'm also in contact
with several of these individuals and, interestingly, all became artists. Nelly
Toll, for instance, made rather affecting drawings of her circumscribed
existence during those years and recently had those drawings and paintings
published in book form. Does making art--drawings and poems, for example--count
as game-playing?

There's a good book on hidden children that may include helpful information,
although the focus is on loss and trauma. The author is a psychiatrist who
has treated numerous "children of the Holocaust" and who was herself a hidden
child:

Claudine Vegh. Afterword by Bruno Bettelheim. New York: E. P. Dutton, 1984.

Kimberly--First, it is important to note that Treblinka was an
extermination camp, not a concentration camp.
The Steiner book mentioned by Steve Salina is both fascinating
and controversial because it is, in essence, "docudrama"--a novel that
elaborates on some of the available documentation.
As for the revolt, there are many good historical sources. Two
basic ones are Yitzhak Arad's *Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka* and Alexander
Donat (Ed), *The Death Camp Treblinka.*

Re: Treblinka, 2 August 1943 revolt there and some involved persons.

My data may not help you trace Moshe Y. Lubling, but, if he was one of
the organizers of the revolt, he may be mentioned in sources unknown to
me describing other Treblinka conspirators and resistance organizers, such
as:

1. Dr. Julian Chorazycki, M.D., a Warsaw ear, nose and throat specialist,
a captain in the Polish army, organized three combat units. He was
brutally murdered on April 19, 1943 by deputy commander Kurt
Franz.

2. Rakowski, no first name given, another of the less qualified leaders,
was shot on May 3, 1943.

Krakowski, Shmuel. The war of the doomed: Jewish Armed Resistance in
Poland, 1942-1944. New York: Holmes and Mere, 1984 has Kalman
Feigman's eye witness testimony to these murders.

Samuel Rajzman was another witness - his testimony is in Punishment of
War Criminals. cf. p. 861, note 16, Gilbert, Martin, Holocaust, Holt.
New York, 1985.

3. Israel Sudowicz, Alfred Galewski, Zelo Bloch and Dr. Leichert, another
Polish army officer, were later organizers and leaders of the revolt.
Leichert supposedly arrived in Treblinka in May 1943.

Possibly worth checking:

New York: Barnes and Noble, 1974.

210 p., [8] p. of plates : ill. ; 24 cm.

I do not know whether Moshe Lubling is mentioned in any of these books;
he is not in Gilbert's Holocaust.

I have a few more titles about Treblinka and shall be glad to share them.

MANNHEIM, Germany, Nov 7 - german police announced today the
arrest of a u.s. citizen who claims the nazis did not kill
millions of jews in the holocaust.

Fred Leuchter has been charged with inciting racial hatred and
defaming Nazi death camp victims. reuters says the charges carry
a maximum sentence of five years in jail.

Reports say leuchter was seized last week when he sought to
appear on a television talk show in the western city of mannheim.

Leuchter is the author of a book that claims the Nazis lacked the
technology to gas millions of Jews to death.

OK, here's an actual reference to Lubling I've been able to track down.
It can be found in Isaiah Trunk's *Jewish Responses to Nazi Persecution*
(Stein & Day), 1979. This is from testimony taken in 1945 from
someone identified as "Y.M." who was transported to Treblinka from
the Siedlce Getto on 8/22/42. The testimony reads in part:
"...the initiators of the uprising would meet at night on their
wooden bunks to discuss our plans...Among them was Dr. Chorazycki,...
Captain Zela, Kurland of Warsaw, and Lubling of Silesia. After
the first steps were taken, a few more were coopted...(p.264)
This supports the notion that Lubling was among the original four who
planned the uprising and certainly does not seem as well known as the
other three. In this document there are several other references to
the others, but nothing more on Lubling. HG

JEW HATRED continues to infect the modern world. In our
post-Holocaust era, its effects are still felt in two ways.
First, in all parts of the globe, anti-Semitism persists, at times
on an institutional level, in other places as personal prejudice.
Second, it is increasingly clear that Jewish self-identity has
been profoundly affected by twentieth century manifestations
of Jew-hatred. For both of these reasons, careful and vigilant
study of anti-Semitism is required as we enter a new millennium.

Yet in our increasingly global society, anti-Semitism is but one
among many forms of baseless hatred. This conference also
seeks some understanding of the prejudices and ethnic violence
that confront us all. It is our hope that, because of its religious,
nationalistic, and racial foundation, study of Jew-hatred in
particular may indeed provide a beginning toward understanding
these more general problems of the modern world.

This conference is scheduled to coincide with the 55th anniversary
of Kristallnacht, the pogrom that in 1938 publicly opened the
process of Holocaust. It combines lectures, films, discussion groups,
a commemoration service, and concludes with a theatrical adaptation
of Elie Wiesel's Dawn (adapted and directed by Professor David Jaffe,
Connecticut College).

Please join us for this important event. The challenge of
understanding the past in order to work for the elimination of
hatred has never pressed more urgently.

Registration Fee: $65. (No fee for students)
Closing Banquet: $30.

For registration, hotels, and other information, contact the
conference office at (203) 439-2860.

From: FISHMAN%SNYFARVA.BITNET@uicvm.uic.edu

Colleagues,

"Remembering for the Future II" is scheduled for March 13-17 in Berlin.
The coordinating committee has experienced serious difficulties in attempting to
generate enthusiasm--and raise funds--for this international conference on the
Holocaust. I thought the following excerpt from an open letter signed by
Franklin H. Littell, Chairman of the International Committee, might be pertinent
to the concerns of this list:

"[the German Committee] have received disappointingly little help
from Bonn: the politicians obviously think of anything connected
with the Holocaust as a 'Jewish affair,' and it comes under the
rubric of 'damage control.' There is no understanding of the
fundamental point our German colleagues now feel so keenly--a
conviction they share with us: that the Holocaust is something
that happened to Christendom, and not alone to the Jewish people.

The politicians think they have done what there is to be
done when they respond to the World Jewish Congress and the ADL
from time to time, and keep on course vis-<-vis Israel. The German
colleagues have aroused some substantial church support, but rather
less academic support. (Unhappily many of the German academics
think they should be 'above politics' and avoid programs of
meta-political significance like our Berlin conference. They
also don't like to demean themselves by partnership with ordinary
citizens in initiatives like this. I remember this was one of the
basic reasons why the *Evangelische Akademien* {church conference
centers} were founded 45 years ago. There are some fine exceptions,
but the spontaneous initiative that comes so readily in Canada and
the USA just isn't there among the academics, who are inclined to
wait and see--and call their stance 'scientific objectivity.')

Our friends are *very* insistent that they need our participation
and support to make their voices heard in their country's worsening
situation in respect to neo-Nazism, Teutonic resentment of foreign
        workers, and resurgent antisemitism."

Two things need to be remembered.
First, despite the sentencing by other individuals, I would like anyone
to provide the specific details, dates, and and current proceedings in
Fred Leuchter's arrests. I have been looking into Holocaust Revisionism/Denial
for a year, and this guy is a major player. He testified in the trial
of a Canadian revisionist/denier Ernst Zundel (SP?), trying to pass himself
off as an electrical engineer. According to Deborah Lipstadt (whose book
is more substantive than "Assassins of Memory" and better at documenting
revisionism according to the revisionists themselves) he has been featured
on ABC's PrimeTime Live as an accredited gas chamber expert.

Two, don't forget that we've seen trials in Europe before, and it is
important to keep Robert Faurisson in mind. This arrest is not a precedent
but certainly fronts an important issue.

The "Remembering for the Future II" conference on the Holocaust is set
for March 13-17 in Berlin, Germany. Registration is $75. Roundtrip airfare has
been worked out as $438 (from NY and NJ, slightly more, I think, elsewhere),
with both hostel and hotel rooms available. The coordinating committee is
composed of scholars and others representing the U.S., England, and Germany
(principally). June 1 was the deadline for abstracts, but I'm certain there's
room for others who wish to be present. For further information, contact one of

Since this issue came up, I offer a short article by me which was posted
on USENET. Some people from the soc.culture.german group expressed
interest in it and are trying to get an expanded version to appear
in German newspapers.

-----------------------------------------------------
For the record, let me note that Leuchter is not an engineer. His
only higher education consist of a BA in the humanities, 1964. He
has no training in chemistry, toxicology etc.

Also, although he is sometimes presented as a "gas chamber expert",
Leuchter never did any actual work on any gas chamber. He did build
some lethal injection machines, but prisons stopped doing business
with him when it was discovered his machines are defective, and cause
great pains to the people being executed. This is the opinion of
Dr. Edward Brunner, chair of the department of Anesthesia at the
prestigious Northwestern Medical School.

Leuchter lied in court about his alleged connection with two US prisons,
in North Carolina and California; he said he worked with them, while in
one case the "work" consisted of a phone call he made to the warden,
suggesting his services (which were rejected), and the other prison never
heard of him. He also lied about having worked in the Smithonian Institute,
which never heard of him either.

Strangely enough, Leuchter has always chased publicity. He seems to
enjoy his (baseless) reputation as an "expert on killing", and, while
most people who share the same profession wish to remain anonymous,
Leuchter is all but too happy to appear on talk shows, give interviews
etc. Telling the truth, however, is not his strongest side. Some years
ago, he was sued in the US for falsely representing himself as an engineer.
The court ordered him not to use the title "engineer" any more.

In 1985, Nazi propagandist Ernst Zundel of Canada funded Leuchter's trip
to Auschwitz-Birkenau. After a very brief inspection of the gas chambers
there (most of which were blown to pieces by the SS in 1944), Leuchter
wrote an "engineering report" which claimed to have proven that
mass murder with cyanide gas could not have taken place in those
gas chambers.

I have read the full report. Leuchter's claims are so preposterous
that even other neo-Nazi Holocaust deniers have long abandoned them.
He claims, for instance, that the men dropping the Zyklon-B into the
introduction devices in Kremas II and III would die as the gas would
rise and suffocate them. The "gas chamber expert" hasn't heard of gas
masks, apparently. The rest of Leuchter's claims are similarly baseless.

As a side note, gas chambers for killing people with HCN gas (the
same gas released by Zyklon-B) were built in the US as early as 1920.
It is quite ridiculous to claim that this could not be repeated in 1942
because of "technical difficulties".

Subject: Treblinka - not one, but two camps

From: TKGIERYMSKI%stthomas.edu@uicvm.uic.edu

Mr. Hank Greenspan wrote recently:

First, it is important to note that Treblinka was an
extermination camp, not a concentration camp.

Treblinka was both. However, the so called penal labor camp there is less
well known and less talked about. Let me explain.

Several years before the WW II the Poles started operating a gravel pit
near the small town of Treblinka and connected with it by a four
kilometers long railway siding. It was taken over by the Nazis in 1941 and
exploited for the fortifications in preparation for the attack on the Soviet
Union. Some time later the Kreishauptman in nearby Sokolow Podlaski
set up a factory for concrete products, using the gravel from the pit. To
provide free labor the Germans established a forced labor camp near the
pit. This camp was named "Arbeitslager Treblinka" in Fischer's order of
11/15/1941:

        Zur Bekampfung des volksschadigenden Verhaltens
        Einzelner ordne ich ...

        1. In Treblinka, Kreis Sokolow, ist ein Arbeitslager zu
           errichten.

(For the purpose of combating the individuals harmful to the nation I
order the establishment of a labor camp in Treblinka.)

I do not have the exact date of its opening; it seems that the idea came
from Ernst Gramms and was, as the excerpt shows, approved by Ludwig
Fischer, the governor of the Warsaw district.

At first it was a place of deportation for "stubborn elements," such as
farmers who failed to deliver the imposed agricultural contingents, those
who shirked the obligatory work for the Germans, and the like.
SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer von Eupenn was was put in charge; he commanded
about 20 SS-men, all Germans, and a detachment of assistant workers, all
of them Ukrainian nationalists.

The camp covered about 16 hectares. It was enclosed by barbed wire,
which also separated the two inside parts, one for the staff, the other for
the inmates. These were Christian and Jewish Poles, although even then
the Jews were brought in to be killed as Jews. The Poles were sent there
for their individual transgressions against the Germans. Until the death
camp was established Jews were sent to Arbeitslager Treblinka in small
numbers.

The stay in this camp was to be 2 to 6 months, but persons suspected of
political activity often ended in other concentration camps. At the
beginning there were several scores of prisoners there; eventually their
number varied from 1000 to 1200; 800-900 of them worked under
extreme conditions at the gravel pit or loading the railway trucks at nearby
junction of Malkinia. Women worked at the farm belonging to the camp.

The Jews, numbering 200-250, were skilled artisans and worked in the
camp workshops. Once the death camp was operating they were soon sent
to gas chambers, and replaced by other Jews. One of the reasons for this
rotation was that the labor camp staff was jealous of the opportunity for
plunder the guards at the death camp had.

The prisoners in Arbeitslager Treblinka were beaten, tortured and forced
to work beyond their strength. They were fed inadequately for the effort
demanded of them. Diseases and epidemics spread quickly; there was no
medical help. There were selection of weaker prisoners for killing, as well
as willful individual murder of prisoners by the guards. After the war
about 40 mass graves were discovered in the vicinity of the camp. The
Poles estimated that about 10000 prisoners passed through this camp and
as many as 75% of those died from hunger, emaciation and torture or
were shot. The conditions at Treblinka work camp largely resembled
those in other concentration camps.

Eichmann came several times to occupied Poland in the second half of
1941 to discuss the preparations for the "final solution." Treblinka was
probably chosen as a site for one of the death camps of the Operation
Reinhard because it was near Warsaw whose ghetto had the biggest
concentration of Jews, had good railway connection with it, and yet was
in an out of way area in the forests. Its construction was made easier by
the available labor force from the nearby Treblinka work camp. The
construction of the death camp started in the spring of 1942 and was
completed in July 1942. In letters and other documents the Germans
continued to call the new death camp "das Lager Treblinka," or
"Arbeitslager Treblinka" or sometimes simply "Treblinka."

Dr. med. Irmfried Eberle writes thus to the German Commissioner of the
Warsaw Ghetto, Hans Auserweld on 19th June, 1942, demanding various
supplies and equipment for the death camp:

Fur das Lager Treblinka werden noch benotigt:

(For the Camp Treblinka there is still need:)

He lists, among other things, 30 twenty five watt, 20 sixty watt, 20
seventy five watt and 20 one hundred watt bulbs - 120 volts each.

In another letter dated 7 July, 1942 he demands more supplies and makes
the chilling announcement:

Das Arbeitslager Treblinka wird am Sonnabend,
        den 11.7. 42 betriebsfertig sein.

(The labor camp Treblinka will be ready for work on Saturday, 11 of July,
1942.)

The camp, enclosed by barbed wire, covered an area of about 13.5
hectares. I shall not describe it; such details are available in many books.

I shall conclude with a testimony of a prisoner in Arbeitslager Treblinka,
situated about 3 kilometers away from the death camp.

The spring winds brought with them the smell of
burning bodies from the nearby extermination camp.
We breathed in the stench of smoldering corpses ...
We heard the clatter of the excavators for days
and nights on end... At night we gazed at skies red
from the flames. Sometimes you could also see
tongues of flame rising into the night...
