Although I am myself a clinical psychologist (almost as suspect as being a "child of survivors"), I do not feel that either the survivors or their children have been well served by the great bulk of the psychiatric/clin psych literature. Part of the problem is that the relevant dimensions through which the destruction has entered into people's lives do not fit well with traditional psychological/psychiatric categories. In my own view, those dimensions have more to do with knowledge than with personality and with sensitivities more than symptoms. In any case, I am not aware of any studies beyond the anecdotal (e.g., the original Epstein book as AP noted) that track what I'm afraid my field would start calling "positive" or "prosocial" outcomes of the Holocaust--and, once again, miss the point. Trying to fit the dehumanizing experience of the Holocaust into traditional diagnostic categories has done a great diservice because it forces the assumption of pathology and ignores the enormous adaptiveness of both survivors and their children. Most survivors I speak to also resent this diagnostic categorization. Unfortunatly, the reparations plan initially demanded a diagnosis and so forced our attempts to understand the psych/social consequences of the Holocaust into traditional and misguided directions. It seems it is way past due to begin to rethink our approach to understanding survivors and their children and begin to recognize the flaw in trying to fit all survivors into categories that are often meaningless and have hindred progress to understand the long term effect of the Holocaust experience.---Jerry ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1993 11:11:00 CST Reply-To: Holocaust List Sender: Holocaust List From: JIMMOTT@spss.com Subject: Diagnosing Survivors From: "Terry Moore" If I may, can anyone recommend significant literature which deals effectively with the issues of "diagnosing" survivors? A vital and early paper on the DANGERS of using conventional psychiatric categories in the context of survivors' experiences is, "Beyond Traumatic Neurosis:A Psychoanalytic Study of Late Reactions to Concentration Camp Trauma." International Journal of Psychoanalysis (1968):49:719-31. A very accessible, recent discussion of psychic trauma generally is Judith Herman's *Trauma and Recovery*, Basic Books, 1992. Herman attempts to discuss the Holocaust survivors in the same context as that of victims of incest and/or rape, Vietnam Vets, and other victims of violence. Partly because of such a broad sweep, the discussion of Holocaust survivors in particular is not always accurate. On the other hand, the book beautifully sets out the "diagnostic ballpark" for the whole phenomenon of post-traumatic disorders--however much, or little, the experience of Holocaust survivors may be made more comprehensible through this paradigm. Whoops--I should have noted above that "Beyond Traumatic Neurosis" was written by psychiatrist Ernest Rappaport, himself a Holocaust survivor. In my own view, the best single discussion of psychic trauma as it may apply to at least some Holocaust survivors is Henry Krystal's, "Trauma and Affects," recently revised and republished in *Integration and Self-Healing*, Analytic Press, 1988. Henry Krystal is also a psychiatristand Holocaust survivor. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 11 Oct 1993 10:09:00 CST Reply-To: Holocaust List Sender: Holocaust List From: JIMMOTT@spss.com Subject: Diagnosing Survivors (an addendum to previous append) From: Hank.Greenspan@um.cc.umich.edu An addendum: Perhaps better than any of the psychiatrists'/psychologists' discussions of trauma is Jean Amery's incredible essay, "Torture," second chapter of *At the Mind's Limits: Contemplations by a Survivor on Auschwitz and Its Realities* Indiana, 1980. SUBMITTAL INSTRUCTIONS: CONTACT PERSON/OFFICE: Center for the Critical Analysis of Contemporary Culture Rutgers University 8 Bishop Place New Brunswick, NJ 08903 Phone: 908-932-8426 Fax: 908-932-8683 POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Rutgers University interdisciplinary Center for the Critical Analysis of Contemporary Culture announces a competition in Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowships on the topic, "Environments in the Public Sphere." The awards for the 1993-1994 Rockefeller Fellowships are for $32,000. The Center has received a three-year Rockefeller Foundation grant for its project, "Cultures and Environments in the Public Sphere," the first year of which will concentrate on "Environments in the Public Sphere," a title intended to encourage research and discussion by international scholars and practitioners interested in three related themes. Those themes are: 1) the politics of the environment; 2) The complex entanglement of questions of culture and identity in environmental policies; 3) the political theory of the "public sphere". That term is offered as a means of describing environments themselves (considered as shifting units and scales of interaction, communication, reflection, decision making); the sites and processes where cultural identities form, develop, collide, ally with others; and the increasingly transnational sites and processes where environmental politics are contested. CCACC invites applications from all different disciplinary perspectives proposing studies of all kinds - empirical, analytical, literary, historical, theoretical, etc. Emphasis will be given to projects related to transnational aspects of the subject. CCACC also awards two Rutgers University fellowships. Rutgers fellows will be expected to participate and present their work in Center seminars, which meet weekly throughout the academic year. ************************************************** ======================================================= MISCELLANEOUS PROFESSIONAL OPENINGS ************************************************** 1) Position: Associate Specialist/Editor Institution: Unnamed Institution in Berkeley Location: California Associate Specialist (Associate Editor). Paul Hamburg Reference Librarian Simon Wiesenthal Center ========================= From: CUMMINGSR%AdminA.RFERL.ORG@uicvm.uic.edu Thanks, again, for the reference material on Sobibor. I found this AP report and made the following excerpts, for those interested in this subject: By MONIKA SCISLOWSKA SOBIBOR, oct 15 (AP) - Fifty years after inmates of the Nazi death camp in Sobibor escaped in a prisoner revolt, the few remaining survivors of the camp honored some 250,000 Jews murdered in its gas chambers. "Now comes a moment for which I waited many years," Thomas "Toivi" Blatt, 66, said through tears Thursday as he and five other survivors unveiled metal tablets recalling the deaths in five languages. It was a culmination of 30 years' effort by Blatt, founder and chairman of the Holocaust Sites Preservation Committee, to replace Communist-era memorials that list Soviet prisoners as the camp's main victims. Blatt, who lives in Santa Barbara, Calif., said they only "casually" mentioned the Jews killed. Then on Oct. 14, 1943, some 300 inmates staged a revolt led by Sasha Pechursky, a Russian Jew. They killed 23 German officers and guards. Although only 52 inmates survived the escape, it is considered the largest and most successful prisoner0revolt in a Nazi death camp during World War II. The Germans dismantled the death camp after the escape. "We had nothing to lose. We had our death sentences in our pockets," said former inmate Esther Raab, 71, who lives in Vineland, New Jersey. Except for one brother, her entire family died in the Sobibor camp. On Thursday, a rabbi and a Polish army priest prayed under sunny skies as a huge torch burned in a wooded area where the camp once stood. Wreaths of white, violet and red flowers were laid at the mound of ashes of the murdered. Several hundred Poles and Jews attended the three-hour ceremony. Only 14 prisoners who survived the escape are still alive, and nearly all were too old to make the trip to Thursday's ceremony. President Lech Walesa and Prime Minister Hanna Suchocka sent letters praising the moral victory of the Sobibor insurgents, saying they chose death in a dignified struggle instead of by poison gas. The Israeli, U.S. and German embassies sent representatives to the ceremony. The uprising was portrayed on film in "Escape from Sobibor" made by CBS-TV of the United States in the 1980s with Blatt and Raab as consultants. --==oo00oo==-- cummingsr@rferl.org RFE/RL Inc Munich,Germany ============================ From: "Terry Moore" Richard, Here are some of the sources I found in my library that may be of interest on Sobibor. The focus is to be on the domestic German audience and we hope to discuss the Nazis' use of all major communications media: public speaking, rallies, posters, radio, and film. The first segment will cover the National Socialist rise to power, 1920-33; the second segment will involve the consolidation of power and the institutionalization of propaganda from 1933-39; the final segment will focus on domestic propaganda produced in the Third Reich during the war years. As you might imagine, this is proving to be an immensely complex undertaking, and one of the biggest problems (apart from funding, which is ALWAYS the biggest problem) is finding resources, both human and other- wise. Specifically, I wonder if anyone on the network has suggestions or information to offer regarding any of the following questions: --Do you know anyone living in North America who lived in Germany during the Third Reich (or any part thereof) and who might be willing to talk on camera about his/her memories of the regime's propaganda activities? We would be especially interested in interviewing anyone who actually worked for the Propaganda Ministry in any capacity. --Do you know of any collections of print material (such as posters, magazines, leaflets, or newspapers) and/or radio recordings from the Third Reich? The focus again is (for now) on North American collections. I think we're pretty knowledgable on film holdings in North America (thanks largely to Richard Alan Nelson), and we know quite a bit about the holdings in the Library of Congress and the National Archives. We also plan to visit the Hoover Institution collection at Stanford. Are there any others? --Do you know any scholars (English-speaking, preferably) who are regarded as authorities in some aspect of Nazi propaganda? We have already found several experts who have agreed to serve on our advisory board: Jay Baird from Miami U., Haig Bosmajian from Minnesota, Randall Bytwerk from Calvin College, Fred Casmir from Pepperdine, Robert Herzstein from South Carolina, Garth Jowett from Houston, Michael Kater from York University, Canada, Richard Alan Nelson from Kansas State, and David Welch from the UK. Do you know of any others we should contact? --Are you aware of any funding sources that provide grant support for projects like this? We already know about the Macarthur Foundation, NEH, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Schumann Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts. Are there any other which we should contact? Justin, I have many contacts with people who lived in Germany during WWII. I can probably locate one or two for you in the US who lived there during the war. I am in touch with some former German soldiers, now living in the US, if this is of interest? Please let me know. I am not certain, if they would be willing to go on camera to talk about that, but you could ask. Age is also a factor. Many are not in good health, as you know. Absolutely. Let me consult my library. I have several books dealing with this aspect of the Third Reich, especially facsimile reproductions of "Der Adler". Again, absolutely. One of the finest works, and regarded as the standard work on this subject is "A History of National Socialist Progpaganda". The author's name I forget, but I read this many years ago, and have the book in my library. I also have others, particularly German, whose works were translated into English. I will get that info for you, but it will be Monday, before I can send it. Are you interested in any info on Goebbels? I have many sources on this one. --Are you aware of any funding sources that provide grant support for projects like this? We already know about the Macarthur Foundation, NEH, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Schumann Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts. Are there any other which we should contact? It seems to me that the Federal Government offers funding for such projects, but I can't think of the agency or title. Surely someone would know what government agency would sponsor this. But I am certain that they do. One other thing. What about the Simon Wiesenthal Foundation? I don't expect any one person to address all of these concerns, but if anyone has an idea for any of them, I'd be grateful to receive it. personally. Hope this will help. Commemorations of the ghetto, in which 100,000 died before the area was levelled in October 1943, entered the second of four days, attended by ministers anxious to demonstrate that relations between Belarussians and Jews were generally good. "It is time to tell the truth -- that the Minsk ghetto was as big a symbol of Jewish genocide as Babi Yar and the Warsaw ghetto," Foreign Minister Pyotr Kravchenko said earlier this week, referring to Nazi atrocities in Ukraine and Poland. The ghetto set up by Nazi occupiers had an inner area reserved for tens of thousands of Jews brought to Minsk by train from Hamburg. Large numbers of deportees were brought from France, Holland, Poland and Czechoslovakia. The war had a devastating effect on Belarus as a whole -- two million people, or one in three residents, were killed and the country was left in ruins. Before the outbreak of the war, there were 400,000 Jews in Belarus, many having settled there because they were banned from living in much of tsarist Russia. Author: Bent Bludnikow (archivist at the National Archives of Denmark), title: Three (muted) cheers for Denmark. Below are a few excerpts: In October 1943, Danish Jews were taken to safety in Sweden and thus escaped the Nazis. This rescue action, an expression of altruism in the midst of war, is indeed worth celebrating. () Today, everyone can look back with pride at the rescue of the Danish Jews. Many Americans can tell you the story of the King of Denmark, who wore the yellow star of David on his jacket out of solidarity with the Jews of this country - a story which is actually not true. () So far so good. The trouble is that the rescue isn't the whole story of Denmark's attitude toward Jews in need, nor does it give a true picture of the way it responded to the moral challenge of the 1930's and the '40s. Denmark's heroic efforts were expended only to help Danish Jews. As far as non-Danish Jews were concerned, and probably Gypsies as well, there was no mercy. Jews from abroad - not least from Germany - tried to get into Denmark in great numbers from 1933 onwards. When they got here, they were either turned back at the border or given a temporary residence permit for three to six months, and deported when it expired. Official Danish policy was consistent, and as hard as iron: K.K. Steincke, the Social Democratic minister of justice, argued that Germany's anti-Jewish laws were legitimate German legislation which did not entitle Jews to asylum in Denmark. () This cynical policy was upheld through the whole war. Even during the German occupation, Jews were turned away and deported. () Many Jews fled to Denmark after Kristallnacht in 1938, only to be met by this cynical policy. In consequence, they had to seek refuge elsewhere, and many ended up in Central Europe, where they were subsequently picked up by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps. It might be argued that this was normal policy for European countries in those years, but Denmark belonged to the most restrictive countries. And no other country has portrayed itself as a democracy that passed the test when the Nazi threat demanded special moral courage. () There are good reasons for celebrating the Danish rescue activities. But if in all the cheering we forget the victims, if we forget that every nation contains elements of both good and evil, of moral engagement and moral indifference, we shall be guilty of a distorion of history. ================ Quoted by: J. I am currently writing a book about church- sponsored antisemitic propaganda. SPecifically, I am writing the history of the "Institute for the Study and Eradication of Jewish Influence on German Church Life," established by the Protestant church in 1939. The Institute had as members Protestant (and a few Catholic) professors of theology, ministers, bishops, etc., and sponsored numerous conferences and publications. The goal was creating a Judenrein Christianity for a Judenrein Germany. A version of the New Testament and the hymnal, purged of all Jewish references, were published and distributed to churches throughout the Reich; 100,000 copies of each were printed. In addition, literature was published arguing that Jesus' own goal was the destruction of Judaism (a violent and dangerous religion), etc. My work is based on newly opened archives as well as published materials. Please let me know if this interests you. A Holocaust museum in Berlin? To my knowledge, there are two reasons why people might want to set up this museum: 1) To give a "sign" to the survivors, their children, the children of the victims. 2) To teach young people here about the Holocaust. So I will 1) discuss the first reason 2) discuss the second under the headlines a) The Nazi problem in Germany is misunderstood b) What historians can do about the real dangers c) What to teach young people in Germany d) Less knowledge about the other crimes e) Don't forget the other survivors 3) Why my view is related to West Germany 4) My conclusion 1) Giving a "sign" to the survivors, their children, the children of the victims. -------------------- I'm not qualified to write a lot about the first reason. I'm not able to do good judgement about the feelings of people I do not know. I'm sure for this, however: If the current German government would support it, they would support it only for not loosing international prestige and for related economic reasons. In my eyes, this makes it worthless as a "sign". The real view of the current German government is best represented by the new central memorial at Unter den Linden: Building a memorial that makes nearly everybody a "victim". If the museum would come into existence, it would show the possibility to execute pressure on the current German government, but nothing else. 2) Teaching young people here about the Holocaust. ---------------------- a) The Nazi problem in Germany is misunderstood I hear that people think of the revival of the far right in Germany closely related to pictures of young Skinheads marching the streets. This is a misunderstanding. If these Nazi groups were the problem, they would be no real danger. Their number is higher than estimated by the government, but the German society would well be able to protect itself against this, and if they were the problem, their number wouldn't be underestimated. People who like to detect real dangers will like to read the well-known newspapers and magazines, the publications of the ruling parties, scientific publications, and compare their views on certain topics to the views of the same papers 10 years ago. "Ich sp|re ein leises Wandern." This week, I noticed the following local news: - Less than 1 km away from my home, the "Junge Freiheit" got a working office. The "Junge Freiheit" is the most important German Nazi publication, trying to integrate the Nazi groups with politicians and scientists working in legal parties and by legal means. This office was given to the "Junge Freiheit" by well-behaving businessmen with clean white collars, obviously supporters. - A black student told a newspaper about the tricks she uses to get through the studies of law at the Free University of Berlin. She gives two copies of her work, one with her own African name, the second copy with a German name. Since the copy with the African name will get bad results, she will go to the professor with the second copy for some comparison of the judgements afterwards. Nazis only _appear_ as to be Skinheads marching on the streets. Without the potential and the support in a big part of the society, including academic people, you won't see these pictures. So teaching young people might not be aimed at the real danger. The real danger are all honourable men. b) What historians can do about the real dangers It is very important to disattract open support to nazi groups or efforts by industrialists and businessmen. One way to do this is to dig out the complete history of companies. The people in question won't learn anything out of a museum. They are intelligent and well educated. Part of their reasons to support the far right is rational. Even commercial disadvantages in the short run might be outbalanced by hopeful commercial advantages in the long run in their views. I think these people should see and should know, that even after 50 years, support for Nazis of their company won't be forgotten. The perspective of never being able to get rid of this _might_ be a helpful lesson. c) What to teach young people in Germany If young people know about the Holocaust, about history, and begin committing crimes related to racial prejudice, begin killing foreigners, we tend to say: "They didn't learn out of history." There is no logic in this sentence. The generation of their grandparents killed about 6 million jews, killed about 20 million people in the Soviet Union, made 15 million Europeans slave workers, made ruins out of Europe. They were punished by having to belong to the wealthiest people of the world 15 years later. 99% of them were better off than 99% of their victims, roughly estimated. Their teachers won't tell young Germans the story in the way I just did. But young people have a clear sense for lies, and for things left out. The parts of history can never fit together to a moral system we would like them to have. It's not the duty of historians, and impossible, to make history fit to a moral system. But we owe these young people better answers. Don't teach them more lessons about the Holocaust, before you have taught them why their grandparents got away with it. (Explaining the post-war-collaboration is a lot of work for historians. As one example: I once looked at the Bundesarchiv-copies of the (US National Archives) OMGUS (US Military Government) files. Their status does not make a systematic approach easy.) d) Less knowledge about the other crimes Open Holocaust deniers are a small minority in Germany. Most people who are attracted by the far right won't deny the Holocaust, but nonetheless indentify with Nazi Germany in 33-45. To teach _them_ about history, make a suggestion for a Museum documenting the crimes of the Wehrmacht, make a suggestion for a Museum documenting slave labour in Germany. Show them Auschwitz, but don't forget to show them the place of the nearest slave-worker camp, in the neighbourhood of their parents home. If a teacher is going to tell that young people that nearly everybody was involved, and that everybody knew about the character of that system, the nearest slave-worker-camp is a better example than a place far away in Poland. So dig out this information and make it easily accessible. But be warned: It would also be less popular in Germany than a Holocaust museum. e) Don't forget the other survivors I know that the "Entschddigung" for victims was near to a bad joke. But there are still hundredthousands of people, mostly in the former Soviet Union, who did not get even that. To my knowledge, current backlog at the International Red Cross Archives in Arolsen is about one year. Many people began talking again after 40 years. If a German Government spends money for the victims of Nazi Germany, I would like to see money sent to these people in first place. Making their last years just a little more comfortable. Before they are all dead. 3) Why my view is related to West Germany Every try to look systematically at a question shouldn't forget to look at the own point of view. Legally, there is one Germany. In cultural tradition, in the education of people in working age, in knowledge of history, there are two Germanies and will be for a long time. If a 20-year-old German was raised up in West Germany, he or she normally knows quite a lot about discrimination and murdering of Jews, about concentration camps. Knowledge about the murdering of communists, about Stalags, about Wehrmacht crimes might be next to nothing. If raised up in East Germany, there will be quite a lot of knowledge about all the communists killed. There will be also more knowledge about Wehrmacht crimes. There is less knowledge about what happened to the Jews. So notice that some of my arguments might be weaker when speaking about the whole Germany. 4) My conclusion Regarding the historical knowledge and education of young people, I think there is better application of time and money than fighting for this museum. I do not oppose it. If it would be there, I would go to visit it. Hans-Joachim Zierke P.S.: I'm not a historian. I think the documentary was called "Death Wears a Smile" in reference to the skull and cross bones associated with the SS. It is discussed in some detail in a book about Heydrich; unfortunately I forgot the name of the book, but I would just look for a title that contains "Heydrich". Heydrich was killed by two Czechs who were trained in Britain. After his death, his memory was "honored" by naming the death camps of Treblinka, Belzec and Sobibor "Operation Reinhard". Very informative but no footnotes. MacDonald does have a bibliographic essay for each chapter but I'm getting annoyed with him because of that. _The Czechs Under Nazi Rule_ Mastny, Vojtech (New York 1971) It's been a while since I read it. Very informative. Lots of Czech sources. Author's point of view comes across clearly. _The Transfer of the Sudeten Germans_ Luza, Radomir (New York University Press, 1964) Maybe a bit more heavier going than the previous two titles but this explores the Czech-German conflict in greater detail. It was published by Harper & Brothers, New York London, 1942. This first edition has 32 pp.; perhaps it is what Noam Krendel had in mind? A useful book to start with might be Vojtech Mastny's The Czechs under the Nazi rule, Columbia University Press, 1971. Mastny, if I remember correctly, taught at Columbia, Yale and other places, and specialized in political science and history of the Cold War. His father was a Czech diplomat who, as the story has it, sat outside the door of the conference room when Hitler, Mussolini, Chamberlain, and Daladier concluded the Munich Pact in September 1938 - the Czechs, of course, have not been allowed to attend. My Czech speaking acquaintance informs me that 'Li-di-ce' is pronounced Lee - dee - tze, with the accent falling on Lee, final e short as in 'Berg' and the tz in tze sounding as Z does in German 'Zung' or 'zerstoeren.' Leslie Rampey Middle Georgia College ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1993 12:58:00 CST Reply-To: Holocaust List Sender: Holocaust List From: JIMMOTT@spss.com Subject: Does a Holocaust museum in Berlin make sense? From: "Kenneth.Waltzer" <21409MGR%msu.edu@uicvm.uic.edu> I have recently returned from a German gov't supported trip to Germany, where I spoke with historians, museum directors, educators, and teachers about Holocaust-related historiography and education in Germany, and with politicians, policy-analysts, educators, and teachers about contemporary immigrant and "foreigner" issues. One repeated issue that came up was the issue of a Holocaust museum or memorial in Berlin -- the issue ra ised by Hans Joachim Zierke. People who were concerned about keeping alive the memory and teaching about the Holocaust were not of common mind on the issue of a Holocaust museum or memorial in Berlin. Some teachers who work directly with students on National Socialism and the Holocaust thought it was most important to spend whatever limited resources were available on the camps and their museums and documentation centers. Similarly, people engaged in education efforts at the Wansee Conference museum or at the Topography of Terror museum on the site of the former Gestapo headquarters in Berlin worried about the relation of their efforts to another museum in Berlin. Others, often for the symbolic reasons mentioned by Hans Joachim Zierke, were adamantly for a Holocaust museum or memorial in Berlin, often "in the center of Berlin." They tended to make expressive arguments for such an undertaking rather than practical arguments about educating the next generation -- which is, after all, spread around the country. And Isaac Bubis, who spoke at Sachsenhausen while I was there on the topic "The Holocaust Museum in Washington, A Model for Germany?" to a packed audience, thought there should definitely be a museum, although not quite like the one in the United States. (He spoke respectfully of the Washington museum against the context/backdrop of German criticisms of the museum, but thought for obvious reasons Germany needed a different kind of national museum in Berlin.) All such people shared Hans Joachim Zierke's contempt for the idea of a memorial on the Unter der Linden lumping all "victims" together. It was highly enlightening for a first-time visitor to Germany to be exposed to the high-stakes symbolic politics of museums and memorials in a newly unified nation where neo-Nazism is a rising concern. But there seemed to be a difference between those engaged in the nitty gritty of day-to-day teaching and educating about the past, who accompany their students to the camps and sponsor the local history that educates students about Nazism in their regions, and those engaged in the more symbolic national politics of history and memory. I'm still digesting my notes and observations from the trip, but these are general impressions. There may also be some interesting generational dynamics in all of this, since the history and memory of this period has been addressed and readdressed in keeping with a generational dynamic, beginning withe the 60s generation, who now are the teachers and documentation center workers . . . . Still working all this through. Interested to hear about others' observations . . . . Kenneth.Waltzer@MSU.EDU (21409MGR@MSU.EDU) James Madison College Michigan State U. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1993 17:02:00 CST Reply-To: Holocaust List Sender: Holocaust List From: JIMMOTT@spss.com Subject: More Information on Lidice From: MCLEODJ%sask.usask.ca@uicvm.uic.edu Dear Noam, When I read your request a couple of days ago, together with the replies from Terry and Danny, my (Czech) wife and I discussed it, but as she was imminently departing for the north -- yes, there ARE places north of Saskatoon! -- we decided to postpone a reply till her return at the end of the week. After the several helpful references in today's mail, there is probably not much to add, but there are one or two incidental points that might be of interest. First, "facts" about the Heydrich assassination and its aftermath should be read critically -- i.e. compare reports from different sources. Since the Gentle Revolution of 1989, the Czech paratroops who were flown from Scotland, have been publicly honoured, but under the Czech communist regime, any recognition of their heroism was -- at best -- low key, presumably as they were fighting Nazism from the U.K. and not from Moscow. However, I have to say that I was very agreeably surprised and moved when, totally by accident as I was walking in the direction of the Orthodox Church of Sts Cyril and Methodius in Prague in 1987, I heard a military band playing the RAF March Past. It happened to be the anniversary of the day when the paratroopers had been holed up and killed in the crypt of that church (and which I had had great difficulty tracing twenty years earlier). At the time, the Allied press, presumably basing its report on data from the Czech government in exile, said that 1200 were massacred in Lidice (Lid-ee'- tsuh), while the Germans admitted to something over 400. According to the Czechoslovak (communist) encyclopedia, 192 men were executed (173 on the spot), 196 women were incarcerated or executed, mostly incarcerated, and 105 children were sent to the camp at CHELMNO. Seventeen women and 73 children survived the war. Danny noted that the death camps of Treblinka, Belzec and Sobibor were named "Operation Reinhard" in honour of Heydrich. According to Alan Levy's recent book, "The Wiesenthal File", Operation Reinhard was the code name for the plan to exterminate all Polish Jews. Levy describes the "experimental death camp at Chelmno" as "the testing ground for Aktion Reinhard". It seems as though Chelmno was the link between Lidice and the dedication of the final solution in Poland to Heydrich. Terrible though the massacre at Lidice was, it should be remembered that it was not the only reprisal. Three thousand "residents" of Terezin (Theresienstadt) were transferred to extermination camps following Heydrich's death, 152 Jews were executed in Berlin, the Bishop and ministers of the Sts Cyril and Methodius together with 1357 persons who "approved the assassination" were executed, apparently in Prague, and the village of Lezaky was also destroyed. There seems to be some confusion about the number of Czech soldiers involved in the assassination. I thought it was about half a dozen; the Czech (communist) encyclopedia refers to three and I note that the title of one of Terry's books refers to "Seven Men at Daybreak". Whatever the number, one of them proved to be a traitor and betrayed his colleagues. He was well rewarded by the Nazis, but later executed as a war criminal. In answer to Charles Fishman: It is exactly as I wrote. Edna St. Vincent Millay wrote the poem herself, in English. Harper and Brothers Publishers, New York and London, 1942, published it, in English. It is not a translation. It begins with: (First Voice) Ye martyred peoples of this maddened planet, This Earth, which like a moth about the sun Today does whirl, as if it would itself Its own destruction wreak, seeking to fall In flame from out its orbit, and between Its sister worlds be seen no more at all: Human disaster on so vast a scale The mind can not conceive; and ends on p. 32 Catch him! Catch him! Do not wait! Or will you wait, and share the fate Of the village of Lidice? Or will you wait, and let him destroy The village of Lidice, Illinois? Oh, catch him! Catch him, and stop him soon! Never let him come here! The Writers' War Board decided to commemorate Lidice two days after the news of the massacre there reached America, and asked Edna St. Vincent Millay to write a poem about it. She did, and it was broadcast over the National Broadcasting Company radio network on the evening of October 19, 1942. It was also short-waved to England and other countries. If you have Collected Poems, ESTVM, Harper and Row, Publishers, NY etc. 1956, you will see this slim book mentioned amongst her Poems on a page preceding the title page. But it is not included in the collection. Try university and other libraries: Its catalogue number: PS 3525 .I495 M8 Copyright laws prevent me from offering to duplicate it for you; perhaps one could secure some sort of a blessing for it somewhere? Sincerely, Tadeusz K. Gierymski
