"Volunteers" were used in the Dachau experiments but: "The 'heavenly chariot' as the van [for Raschler's experiments] was named, spread horror throughout the entire concentration camp. The first victims were recruited by the labor assignment office as a special detail offering supplemental rations. Volunteers innocently reported. But after a few days, dark rumors filtered through the camp. No longer did anybody volunteer. The victims were then simply taken from the prisoner barracks under the most varied pretexts.
