1944

John Pehle, director of the War Refuge Board, publishes the
Vrba-Wetzler report about Auschwitz and releases it to the
press. He is reprimanced by Elmer Davis, head of the Office
of War Information (OWI), for publishing such a report
without OWI clearance. Davis states that the escape might
have been orchestrated by the Nazis to spread
disinformation. (See April 7) (USHMM, 1994, p. 68)
