Hungarian Prime Minister Szalasi orders that transportation
must be provided for the deportation of Jewish women; no
longer can they be required to walk. (USHMM, 1994, p. 68)

[SS Brigadier General] Veesenmayer sends a cable to Berlin
expressing his fear that Szalasi's order in effect means the
end of deportations, since means of transport are too often
scarce. Furthermore, the total number of Jews en route to
Germany is estimated at only thirty thousand; thus, it is
unlikely that the goal of fifty thousand will be reached.
(Veesenmayer's cable also discusses the proliferation of
supposedly fraudulent Swiss, Swedish, and Vatican protective
passes.) (Ibid.)

Veesenmayer is instructed by Berlin to persuade Szalasi that
Budapest is easier to defend if the remaining Jews are
removed from the city. (Ibid.)
