Non-Jews join with Jews in donating gold to meet the ransome demand. (USHMM 1993, 45) 1944 As reported in a front-page story in the Christian Science Monitor, Churchill restates British policy that war criminals should not find safe haven in any neutral country at war's end. (USHMM 1994, 61) A Jewish infantry brigade is formed from battalions recruited in Egypt; it includes three regiments of Jewish soldiers from Palestine. The brigade is sent to European battle areas "for the final destruction of Nazism" and serves in Italy after November 1944 as part of the British Eighth Army. (Ibid.)
