September 26

1943

The Gestapo orders the Jewish community of Rome to deliver
50 kilograms (110 pounds) of gold within 36 hours or face
the deportation of 200 Jews. Non-Jews join with Jews in
donating gold to meet the ransome demand. (USHMM 1993, 45)

1944

As reported in a front-page story in the Christian Science
Monitor, Churchill restates British policy that war
criminals should not find safe haven in any neutral country
at war's end. (USHMM 1994, 61)

A Jewish infantry brigade is formed from battalions
recruited in Egypt; it includes three regiments of Jewish
soldiers from Palestine. The brigade is sent to European
battle areas "for the final destruction of Nazism" and
serves in Italy after November 1944 as part of the British Eighth Army. (Ibid.)
