(USHMM 1993, 45) 1944 Following renewed roundups of Jews during the Slovak revolt, the Vatican protests to the Slovak government, and through the apostolic delegate intercedes directly with the Slovak government. Eleven to twelve thousand out of the twenty thousand Jews who survived the deportations of 1942 will be transported to Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen, and Theresienstadt between October 1944 and January 1945. (USHMM 1994, 60) Klooga concentration and labor camp in Estonia is liberated by Soviet forces; eighty-five prisoners are found alive and in hiding. About twenty-four hundred Jewish prisoners were slaughtered by the SS prior to the arrival of Soviet troops. (Ibid.) For the first time, prisoners evacuated from other concentration camps, such as Natzweiler, arrive at Melk concentration camp, a Mauthausen subcamp. (Ibid.)
