A decree is published in Sofia outlining a
plan to exile 25,000 Sofia Jews to outlying provinces.
Within twelve days, 19,153 Jews are driven from the
Bulgarian capital to the provinces. Ironically, this move
helps save Bulgaria's Jews from deportation to the
killing centers. (USHMM 1993, 34)
