British troops enter the Tunisian capital of
Tunis while the port city of Bizerte falls to the
Americans. The German Air Force abandons its North
African airfields. The Allied victory marks the end of
five months of German persecution of Tunisia's Jewish
population numbering approximately fifty thousand. (USHMM 1993, 33)


1944

Marshal Petain of the Vichy government leaves
for Voisins near Rambouillet to be "protected" from Allied
