1940

Rudolf Hoess was officially appointed Commandant of 
Konzentrationslager Auschwitz. (Czech et al, p. 121)

1943

The Vatican Secretary of State reminds the
Apostolic Delegate in London that the Church opposes a
Jewish homeland in Palestine since it was the birthplace
of Jesus and therefore sacred to Catholics. (USHMM 1993, 32)

1944

German plans call for the deportation of three thousand Hungarian 
Jews to Auschwitz daily, beginning May 15. A secret transportation conference is 
convened in Vienna, involving German railroad officials, the SS, and the Hungarian 
gendarmerie, to determine the route for deportation trains to Auschwitz. The route 
via Lvov is judged unsuitable for military reasons. The route via Budapest-Vienna 
is discussed, and it is decided that this route will probably evoke negative 
reactions from the population of Budapest, while the German representative in 
Slovakia argues against the route for political reasons. The conference, 
nevertheless, decides on the route via Slovakia.  (USHMM 1994, 40-41)
