For the first time, Auschwitz commandant Hoess, 
accompanied by Lagerfuehrer Fritzsch and several 
other SS men, chose ten hostages (from among the
prisoners in Block 2) and sentenced them to death
by starvation in reprisal for an escape... They 
were placed in a windowless room in the cellar of
Block 11 and given no food and nothing to drink. 
They had all died by May 26th. (Czech et al, pp. 131-2)
