(USHMM, 1993. Pg. 22) An order from Eichmann's Jewish department of the RSHA states that all members of the ancient Greek-Jewish community of Salonika are to wear the yellow badge and to mark their homes and businesses as Jewish. The "Baron Hirsch" section of Salonika, named for the Jewish philanthropist, is opened as a transit camp and assembly center. (Ibid.) 1944 The Polish Roma (Gypsy) prisoner Weronika Walansewicz (registered as Gypsy prisoner Z 9611) escapes from Auschwitz- Birkenau; she had been deported from Bialystok to Auschwitz on November 28, 1943.
