Anatomy of the Auschwitz Death Camp. Piper has this to say, _Anatomy_ pp. 69-70. Typos mine of course. If you want the footnotes, just ask. Poles. Gaps in source material permit only an approximation of the number of Poles deported to Auschwitz. Like other non-Jewish prisoners, Poles were assigned serial numbers. Therefore Polish prisoners can be counted among the 400,000 registered prisoners (with the exception of those not included in numerical registration). By deducting from that figure 205,000 registered Jewish prisoners, 21,000 registered Gypsies, and 12,000 registered Soviet prisoners of war, one arrives at 162,000 prisoners comprising Poles and other nationalities, including 151,000 prisoners (not counting Jews) within the general (ordinary) serial camp category and 11,000 prisoners assigned the EH (reeducation) serial category comrpsiing almost exclusively Poles. ...a total of 137,000 registered Poles. In addition, at least 10,000 Poles were deported and subsequently put to death without having been registered, including between 3,000 and 4,500 police prisoners. Thus the total number of Poles brought to the camp is estimated at 140,000 to 150,000. Gypsies. Available evidence indicates that about 21,000 Gypsies were registered in the camp. ... In addition, about 1,700 nonregistered Gypsies were killed in the camp. That adds up to a total of 23,000 Gypsies deported to Auschwitz. Soviet prisoners of war. In the years 1941-44, some 12,000 Soviet POWs were registered and assigned serial numbers. ...at least 3,000 unregistered prisoners. This means that at least 15,000 Soviet POWs ended up in the cmap. Other nationalities. The remaining 25,000 registered prisoners represented other nationalities, including [etc.] See Lukas, Richard C. "The Polish Experience during the Holocaust" in Michael Berenbaum, ed. A Mosaic of Victims: Non-Jews Persecuted and Murdered by the Nazis (New York : New York University Press, 1990): 88-95. p. 90 -- "During almost six years of war, Poland lost 6,028,000 of its citizens, or 22 percent of its total population, the highest relation of losses to population of any country in Europe. Over 50 percent of these victims were Polish Christians, victims of prisons, death camps, raids, executions, epidemics, starvation, excessive work and ill treatment." p. 94-5 (footnote 8 to accompany the above) -- Roman Nurowski, 1939-1945: War Losses in Poland (Poznan, 1960), pp. 44ff. There is no agreement concerning the exact number of Polish Christians who perished at the hands of the Nazis. Informed estimates place the loss in the range of 2.8 to 3.1 million people. According to the Encyclopedia of the Holocaust, the estimated Jewish loss was 2.9-3 million. Subject: Re: Polish Victims at Auschwitz Here's one more statistic: According to "Auschwitz Revisionism: An Israeli Scholar's Case," by Peter Steinfels, _New York Times_, 12 Nov. 1989 [which is the article where Yehuda Bauer publicly lowered the number of victims at Auschwitz]: "Five years ago, he [Bauer] said, research by the French Jewish historian Georges Wellers had established that approximately 1.6 million people were gassed, executed by other means, tortured to death or were victims of starvation or disease at Auschwitz. According to these findings, about 1.35 million were Jews. There were 83,000 Polish victims, 20,000 Gypsies and 12,000 Soviet prisoners of war. An additional 150,000 Poles were imprisoned at Auschwitz, then shipped elsewhere where many, although not the majority, died."
