[from the testimony of SS-Hauptsturmfuehrer Hofmann]: During the selections on the ramp he merely supervised. "The Jews were asked to line up. It was my job to preserve calm and order. The selection was carried out by doctors. The instructions were issuedby the commandant or by Grabner. Sometimes entire transports were gassed. At times many able-bodied workers were selected, at other times fewer. The percentage was specified in advance. It was determined by the need for workers... ...The details were then gassed as well. That always led to a great confusion; I even had to watch out to see that working prisoners weren't gassed along with the others. Yes, and sometimes we helped push. Well, what were we supposed to do? We were under orders". (Naumann, 50) [Hofmann was sentenced to life imprisonment] Work Cited Naumann, Bernd.
